Historic Home Styles: Architectural Details That Add Lasting Character

Historic Home Styles

Walk down any street in one of New Jersey’s older neighborhoods and you’ll see stories written in wood, brick, and stone. From the symmetry of Colonial facades to the charm of Craftsman porches and the ornate details of Victorian design, historic homes hold a beauty that modern construction can’t quite replicate.

At Seth A. Leeb Architecture, we’re passionate about capturing that character—whether it’s through restoring a period home to its former glory or designing new residences inspired by the craftsmanship of the past.

In this article, we’ll look at what makes historic home styles so enduring, the architectural details that define them, and why preserving their integrity adds long-term value and curb appeal.

Historic Home Styles and Period Architecture

Period house styles are identified by their unique architectural details. When we look at the Arts & Crafts architecture of Mountain Lakes homes, we notice the covered front porch with columns, triangular-shaped roofs, and earthy exterior color palette. We have a comprehensive range of period architectural styles in NJ, including:

  • Colonial
  • Victorian
  • Queen Anne
  • Cape Cod
  • Tudor Revival
  • Art Deco
  • Farmhouse
  • Foursquare
  • Cottage
  • Ranch.

Traditional Home Design Ideas:  Reflecting Timeless Character

Craftsman home interiors are renowned for their open floor plans, custom built-in bookcases and nooks, and the use of natural materials such as wood. A traditional home’s interior should also reflect the architectural style’s character, which is often reflected in features such as crown molding. A knowledgeable architect will provide interior and exterior design ideas that are appropriate to the period while accommodating the client’s lifestyle needs.

The Seth A. Leeb Architecture team has extensive experience with period architecture renovations, remodeling, and additions. Did you know Seth A. Leeb custom-designed all the cabinets and counters for a major kitchen renovation in the Craftsman style?

Architectural Features That Define Curb Appeal in Older Homes

An article by the National Association of REALTORS® (NAR) states that accentuating the front porch of a house is one way to add curb appeal. Most old-style homes have porches, but what other external architectural features make period homes attractive? It all depends on the historic style of the house. Viewers expect authenticity, such as dramatic columns at the front of Neoclassical homes and turrets on Queen Anne houses, while sloped roofs are a must-have with Colonial-style residences.

Victorian and American Residential Styles: What to Look For

American residential architectural styles are diverse, and each one has distinctive features. We’ve already shared Craftsman characteristics, but what should you look for in Victorian, Colonial, and Cape Cod homes?

Victorian.

Homes reflecting the Victorian era feature steeply pitched roofs, turrets, ornate gables, towers, and painted iron railings.

Colonial.

Multi-story rectangular homes with brick facades, a gabled triangular roof with sloping sides, mullioned windows, and double chimneys.

Cape Cod.

Steep rooflines, dormers, shingle siding, a central doorway, and symmetrical multi-pane windows with shutters.

Restoring Historical Buildings While Preserving Style Integrity

Historical buildings reflect our history. They create a sense of identity and continuity that makes it vital to protect our cultural architectural heritage. Many cities and townships have Historic Preservation Commissions (HPCs) or Historic Review Boards (HRBs) that provide guidance around acceptable period characteristics.

Seth A. Leeb Architecture has extensive knowledge of past and present construction techniques and materials. Our firm has worked with multiple Historic Review Boards and can recommend modern materials that provide the same timeless look to preserve style integrity.
